Meet Our StaffHetty Phillips, Preschool Teacher
Hetty Phillips is a forty-four year veteran of public school education having taught varying elementary grades in the Portsmouth City School District for 35 years prior to becoming lead teacher at the Dr. Miller & Genevieve Toombs Children's Learning Center at Shawnee State University when it opened in 1999. Miss Hetty believes children need to feel loved and appreciated knowing this gives them confidence in themselves as they grow and learn. They also need to develop an early passion for books as reading is the key to much of their learning. Her advice to parents: "Be sure your child is a thousand or even two thousand+ book child when he/she enters kindergarten. My children had an insatiable love for books and I credit that love with their success in school and life." Miss Hetty is the proud mother of three children. Amanda is a graduate of Shawnee State who is working on a Master's Degree in Intervention Specialist; Emily is a lawyer in Miami, Florida; and Matthew who is a 2007 graduate of the OU School of Osteopathic Medicine, planning to specialize in ophthalmology. In her spare tie, Hetty enjoys traveling, reading, writing, music, swimming and walking her dog Preppy. She feels her mother was correct in encouraging her to become a teacher…the worthiest of professions. More About Our Staff
