Frequently Asked Questions
What are the ages of the children you serve?
We are a licensed full day preschool program serving children ages 3-5 in mixed age classroom; a "best practice" supported by research.
Does my child have to be potty-trained?
Being fully potty-trained is a requirement for a licensed preschool program. Pull-ups are not allowable and are in fact an indication that a child is not fully potty-trained.
What are your hours?
The daily tuition rate is for full day preschool program which runs from 9:00-3:00. Extended care is available in the AM from 7:00-9:00 and the PM from 3:00-5:00 for an additional fee. The CLC is not open evenings or week-ends.
I know you are a full day preschool but does my child have to stay all day?
To benefit from the curriculum a full day is recommended. Parents may pick up earlier that 3:00; however, the full day rate applies regardless of the pick-up time.
Does my child have to attend a minimum number of days?
The Children's Learning Center is a preschool not a drop-in center. Children can attend a minimum of 2 days up to 5 days a week with the days spaced M/W/F or T/Th if possible, however, every attempt is made to accommodate the family's work/school schedule in our mission to serve children and families.
Does the Center ever close for snow/weather-related emergencies?
The center closes only if the university closes, allowing us to accommodate SSU students required to be in class and parents required to be at jobs. Closings are posted on the SSU web-site as well as announced on WPAY and WNXT.
If the Center has a weather-related closing, are families charged for that day?
Because are contracted for that day and the closing wasn't planned or predictable, there is no refund for weather-related closings, however, holidays are "no charge" days and defined as such on the contract.
How often are openings available?
Spaces are filled from the waiting list as they become available, therefore it is a good idea to plan ahead and complete the application process 6 months to one year ahead of the anticipated admission date.
Once I go on the waiting list, how long will it be before I get on a roster?
The enrollment is smallest in the summer months, making that a perfect time to enroll new children. Approximately 40 children leave the CLC ready for kindergarten in May so our greatest influx of children is summer and fall. Because of schedule changes and graduations each semester, there is always some movement in the schedule but once the academic year begins, the changes are minimal with little flexibility on filling special requests for given days. Flexibility is a key factor in moving from the waiting list to a class roster.
How many children are served in each room?
Ohio licensing would allow us to serve 24 children in each classroom with 2 adults, a teacher and teaching assistant. Because we are a nationally accredited center, it is our goal to serve no more than 20 in a classroom.
Is there a discount for siblings?
There is a 20% discount for siblings and a 5% discount if the contract is paid in full in advance of the term.
What are the entrance requirements?
A completed application accompanied by $25.00 precedes the full application packet which includes: Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, Proof of Guardianship (if applicable), ODJFS Eligibility Document (if applicable) Class Schedule if SSU student, Financial Aid Award Notification, if SSU student, Alumni card, if applicable.
Is there financial assistance available?
Partnerships exist with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services for the following Ohio counties for families eligible for childcare assistance according to Ohio guidelines. If your county is not listed and you reside in The numbers to call are as follows:

Tell me about the curriculum?
The center strives to be a model of Developmentally Appropriate Practices. Guidelines established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children are followed. At the CLC we believe that children learn primarily through active play while exploring and interacting with their environments. That belief is based on sound research by leading theorists such as Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotski, Maria Montessori, Erick Erikson, and the acclaimed early childhood movement from Reggio Emilia, Italy. Is lunch included in the price?
The daily rate includes breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack.
What if my child is a picky eater, can they bring their lunch?
Socialization and exposure to new things are goals of any preschool program. The CLC participates in the federal food service program and balanced meals providing 1/3 of the minimum required daily nutrition is served each day. Children are not permitted to bring their lunch unless there is medical documentation supporting that need. Special diets/food allergies are accommodated.
Is the facility handicapped accessible?
The facility was built in 1999 and fully handicapped accessible. If a child has a known disability and an IEP, a team meeting must be held with school district officials prior to enrollment. If a disability is suspected once a child is enrolled, referrals are made to the proper agencies to secure the needed supports and serve the child in the least restrictive and most appropriate environment.
